Joseph, born in Memramcook, New Brunswick, was the son of Pierre Gallant and Esther Brun.

Mary was born in Menoudie, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia (Nouvelle-Ecosse), the 3rd child (I think) of John William Finnigan dit Fagan from Ireland and Marie Brun of Nova Scotia. Her family name was sometimes written as “Fanagan” or “Phegan”. Census records referred to her as Irish.

Joseph and Mary married on 15 Feb 1825 in Barachois, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. Theirs was not the only marriage between the two families. Joseph’s slightly older brother, Fidele, married Marie’s sister Helene on 11 Feb 1831. For that matter, Joseph and Mary were second cousins, both tracing their lineage back to great-grandparents Pierre Doiron dit Gould and Anne Forest.

The couple seem to have settled in Richibucto Village. Their son Jean was reportedly born there in 1827. However, a Mary/Marie Gallant had a son Jean baptized at Mont du Carmel, Prince Edward Island in March 1827, and a Joseph Gallant and Marie “Phegan” later had two children baptized in Tignish, Prince Edward Island – Joseph in 1837, Israel in 1840. I don’t know whether it was them.

The 1861 census showed Joseph (58), laborer, in Richibuctou, Kent County, New Brunswick, with wife Mary (58), daughters Mary Bouché (28) and “Jan” (Jane/Genevieve, 19), and grandchildren James Bouché (6), William Bouché (3), and Julia Gallant (6). It listed all of them as from New Brunswick. They were living two census pages away from Mary’s maternal uncle Placide Brun. Granddaughter Julia was the daughter of Jean Gallant and his first wife Émilie Mercure. I don’t know why she wasn’t with her father and stepmother, wherever they were.

Joseph died in Richibucto Village in 1864. Mary remained in Richibucto until her death in 1899, showing up in the census records of 1881 and 1891. Her death record incorrectly claimed she was born in Menoudie, New Brunswick instead of Menoudie, Nova Scotia. She’s buried in the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Cemetery, Rexton (formerly called Kingston), Kent County.

Children

Joseph Jean Gallant (1827-????)

Jean has his own entry in the family tree.

Marie Gallant (1832-????)

Marie married James Boucher/Bouché (~1832-????) in 1852. They had at least three children:

Marguerite (5 Aug 1853-????) — prob. died young

Jacques/James (3 Feb 1856-????)

Guillaume (Mar 1859-????)

James probably died around the end of the 1850s, because the 1861 census for Richibucto showed Marie and her two younger children, listed as James and William, living with her parents.

Appolonie Gallant (1834-1892)

Appolonie married Onésime Doucet (1832-????) in 1854 in Saint-Louis-de-Kent, Kent, New Brunswick. I don’t know whether they had any children. She married Joseph Martin (1819-????) in 1864 in Grand-Digue, Dundas, Kent. Their children:

Jaddus (21 Sep 1865-19xx) — m. Marie Rose McGrath on 3 Aug 1896

Henriette (25 Oct 1867-29 Jun 1901) — m. Docithe McGrath on 16 Feb 1885

Jean-Baptiste (9 Jan 1870-????) — m. Elizabeth LeBlanc on 11 Jan 1897

Madeleine (28 Sep 1871-14 Sep 1874)

Caroline (1872-Jul 1949) — m. Michael Vienneau in 1893

Marie Catherine (6 Sep 1873-????)

Geneviève (1 Oct 1875-????) — m. David LeBlanc on 14 May 1894

There’s a claim that Appolonie’s parents were actually Maximin Gallant and Madeleine Thibodeau. She died in 1892 in Saint-Charles, Kent.
