Mary Ellen (~1803-15 Dec 1899) — m. Joseph Gallant on 15 Feb 1825

Angelique (~1805-18xx) — m. Thadee Gauvin on 26 Aug 1829

Pierre/Peter (10 Aug 1822-18 Jun 1914) — m. Marcelline Arsenault on 8 Aug 1850; m. Marie Downing

Pélagie (~1824-????) — m. ???

Hilarion (28 Mar 1829-????)

William was born reportedly in County Cork, Ireland, parents unknown. I don’t know when he came to Nova Scotia. He’s said to have had two brothers, Edward and Harrock. French documents sometimes rendered the shortened version of his name as “Phegan”.

Marie was born in Franklin Manor (Minudie), Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, the daughter of Jean “dit Petit Charle” Brun and Angélique Doiron dit Gould. She was an older sister of Placide Brun.

William and Marie married about 1795 in Menoudie, Nova Scotia. Their daughters Mary and Helene were born in Nova Scotia. Probably most of their children were.

At some point, the family moved to Barachois, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, on the coast west of Moncton. William died and was buried there in 1832.

The 1851 census for Botsford, Westmorland listed Mary Fagan (69) living with her son Peter (27) and his wife. Marie died in Dec 1859, and was buried with William on 7 Dec 1859.

There was a Claire Finnigan who married a Michael Leary in 1826. A familysearch.org posting claims she was John’s daughter, but there’s no evidence.

Children

John Malcom Finnigan dit Fagan (~1798-1884)

John married Isabelle dit Elizabeth Arsenault (6 Mar 1814-20 Sep 1882), daughter of Remi Arsenault and Perpetue LeBlanc, on 28 Nov 1833 in Barachois, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. Their known children:

Anselm Samuel (Jan 1839-1916) — m. Charlotte Fournier on 1 Aug 1864

Jude John (19 Feb 1841-20 Mar 1914) — m. Marie Blanche Fournier on 8 Sep 1868

Patrick (14 Sep 1843-1845)

Philomene (8 Nov 1845-19xx) — m. Casimir Gallant on 1 Aug 1864; m. John Rousseau on 20 Jul 1914

Philippe Joseph (19 Mar 1848-1927) — m. Basilice Martin on 22 Nov 1870

Christiana (~1849-????)

Edward Joseph (9 Sep 1850-????)

John Leon Amos (5 Apr 1852-5 Jan 1941) — m. Madeleine Collette on 3 Nov 1874

I can’t find them in 1851. There was a John Finnigan of about the right age, but his wife was Mary and the children’s names don’t fit.

The 1861 census for Richibucto listed them as John (63) and Elizabeth (48) Finnigan, with children Samuel (23), Jude (21), Philomene (15), Philip (12), and John (8). (Remember, English documents often listed Isabelles as Elizabeths.)

The 1871 census listed John (71) and Elizabeth (59) with sons Philip (23) and John (19), and probable daughter-in-law Christiana (22), living next door to Antoine Brun dit Anthony O’Brien.

The 1881 census shows John (83) living with presumed son Amos Finnigan (28) and family in Rogersville, Northumberland County, New Brunswick – I guess Amos was the son John of the previous two censuses. By the 1891 census, John Malcolm was gone, but son John “Fenagan” (38) was still living in Rogersville next to Bruns and Arsenaults, as was his older brother Philippe.

Mary Ellen Finnigan dit Fagan (~1803-1899)

Mary has her own entry in the family tree.

Angelique Finnigan dit Fagan (~1805-18xx)

Angelique married Thadee Gauvin (28 May 1808-13 Nov 1894) from Saint-Anselme, Dieppe in 1829 in Memramcook, Westmorland, New Brunswick. Their children:

William (~1824-????)

Aime (~1828-????)

Lizette (~1830-????)

Thadee (10 Feb 1833-1915) — m. Nathalie Leblanc on 24 Jun 1860

Israel (Oct 1835-????)

Helene (20 Mar 1838-19 Jan 1868) — m. Francois Landry on 19 Oct 1858

Aime T. (15 Aug 1843-8 Feb 1932) — m. Rosalie Gould on 4 Sep 1866

Marie (~1846-1905) — m. Ferdinand Doiron on 17 Oct 1864

William Thadee (~1850-31 Jan 1933) — m. ???

Angelique probably died in the 1860s. In the 1871 census, Thadee, widowed, was living with his namesake son and family in Dorchester, Westmorland, New Brunswick. He died in 1894.

Benoni “William” Finnigan dit Fagan (~1808-1885)

Benoni, born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, married Euphrosine Brun (28 Dec 1815-18 Jan 1910) in 1837 at Bas-Cap-Pelé, New Brunswick. Their children:

Pacifique (~1838-19xx) — m. Madeleine Delphine/Dauphine LeBlanc on 22 Dec 1861

François “Frank” (14 Dec 1839-19 Oct 1918) — m. Marie-Blanche Porelle about 1865

Marie (26 May 1841-????)

Marie Blanche (26 Oct 1842-????)

Alphe Daphin (6 Feb 1845-6 Dec 1913) — m. Angelique Arsenault on 5 Nov 1865; m. Marie Bourque on 20 Feb 1882

Marie (26 Dec 1846-May 1847)

Julien (14 Feb 1848-????) — m. Julie Porrel on 29 Jul 1867

Adolphee (7 Mar 1850-????) — m. Marie Bourque about 1871

Obeline (7 Mar 1850-28 Oct 1925) — m. Pierre Comeau on 6 Feb 1872

Angelique (8 Mar 1852-22 Mar 1885) — m. Fabien Brun on 16 Jan 1871

Osithe (16 Jun 1858-????) — m. Anselme Arsenault on 23 Aug 1885

Aime (1 Mar 1860-15 Jan 1945) — m. Marcelline Leger on 19 Feb 1882

Jean (7 Feb 1862-19xx) — m. Justine Babinault on 7 May 1882

Jacob (30 Jun 1864-????)

The family went with Fagan, sometimes spelled Phegan, as their surname. Benoni died in 1885.

Israel Finnigan dit Fagan (1812-1828)

Israel died at age 16.

Helene Finnigan dit Fagan (~1812-????)

Helene married Fidele Gallant (~1802-186x), older brother of her sister Mary’s husband Joseph Gallant, on 11 Feb 1835 in Barachois, Westmorland County, New Brunswick. See the Gallant-Brun family page for the rest.

Peter/Pierre Finnigan dit Fagan (1822-1914)

Pierre married Marcelline Arsenault (1827-????), another daughter of Remi Arsenault and Perpetue LeBlanc, on 8 Aug 1850 in Bas Cap Pelé, New Brunswick. There are three children of record:

Edward (8 Feb 1851-186x)

Marie-Blanche (13 Feb 1852-19xx) — m. Pacifique Legere on 22 Oct 1874

Perpetue (Oct 1853-????)

Pascal (~1858-????)

Edward Peter (10 Jan 1866-11 Mar 1930) — m. Marie-Anne Legere on 7 Nov 1892

The 1851 census showed Peter (27) and Marsaline (25) Fagan with Peter’s mother Mary Fagan (69).

The 1861 census showed Peter (39) and Marcelline (36) Fagan with children Edward (10), Marie-Blanche (9), Perpetue (7), and Pascal (3), plus Peter’s sister Pelagie (36) and her daughter Agnes (6). By the 1871 census, they still had four children, with the elder Edward replaced by a younger namesake. Pierre married Marie Downing (1830-????) sometime between 1881 and 1901. He died in 1914.

Pélagie Finnigan dit Fagan (1824-????)

I know Pélagie married, because in the 1861 census she had a 6-year-old daughter, but she was living with her brother Pierre/Peter. Looks like her married surname starts with a T. That’s all.

Agnes (~1855-????)

Hilarion Finnigan dit Fagan (1829-????)

Grandchildren

George Gallant (1853-19xx)

George Gallant (supposedly born 3 Jun 1853) was the son of Fidele Gallant and Helene Finnigan. On 9 Jan 1888 in Rogersville, he married Celina Legere. Their children included:

Placide (17 Oct 1889-????)

Thomas (14 Feb 1893-????)

“Lolie”? (18 Jun 1894-????)

George Albert/Robert (23 Sep 1897-????)

Nellie (18 Mar 1900-????)

Fred Edmond (22 Sep 1901-????)

Joseph Pascal (17 May 1903-????)

My main reason to care about this distant relative is that, in 1901, he was living next door to his second cousin once removed John/Jean Gallant after the latter had returned from Massachusetts to New Brunswick and remarried. This census listed George’s wife as “Sarah”, and gave dates of birth for the children. I’ve listed the dates above because I have no other data, but I don’t trust them.
