Joseph was born in Madrid, Maine, second child of Samuel Hinkley and Abigail Dunham. He was a carpenter.

Polly was born to Ebenezer Lake and Sarah “Sally” Aspenwall in Phillips, Maine. After Polly’s mother died in 1823, her father Ebenezer remarried on 10 Nov 1825 to Isabel Blethin.

Joseph and Polly married in Phillips on 1 Sep 1835. Phillips is a few miles east of Madrid. They probably had to go there to find a church. Unlike Madrid, which is just a few scattered houses today, Phillips is an actual town.

The 1850 census for Madrid listed Joseph and Polly with children Ezekiel, William R., Sarah, Melissa, George D., and Clara Etta. Joseph’s brother Miller Hinkley, Jr. and his family lived nearby.

In the 1860 census for Madrid, all of their children save the eldest, Ezekiel, were present. (He was in New York.) Their next-door neighbors were Joel W. and Emily Morrison Hinkley, 27 and 21, future parents of Ella Laura Hinkley, Inza’s mother.

In the 1870 census, Joseph (56) and Polly (52) still had children George D. (22) and Clara E. (20) at home.

In 1880, the household included son Dana and his second wife, Luella, plus grandchildren Gardiner and Clara, Dana’s children by his first wife, Elverna. Also present was grand-daughter Vivian Calden, age 8. Vivian’s mother Clara had died in 1875.

Polly died of catarrhal pneumonia in 1894. A Dr. C. L. Toothaker was the reporting physician. In 1900, Joseph was living with his youngest daughter, Florence, and her family.

Joseph died in Madrid in 1901 of a cerebral hemorrhage. He and Polly are buried in the Madrid Village Cemetery under a double stone right up front, with this inscription:

Farewell, dear Parents, sweet thy rest

Weary with years and worn with pain.

Farewell, ‘til in some happy place

We shall behold thy forms again.

To find the Madrid Village Cemetery: From Route 4 passing through Madrid, turn onto the one small bridge north across the Sandy River. This is Reed’s Mill Road. Follow it a few hundred yards, then bear left onto Beech Hill Road. Take the first left onto Brookside Terrace, and the cemetery is just ahead on the left.

Children

Ezekiel Hinkley (1836-1928)

Ezekiel married Rebecca Vosburg (22 Oct 1839-19 Sep 1914) from supposedly Newark, New Jersey, although she always told the census New York. The 1860 census showed Ezekiel and Rebecca, no children yet, living in Arcadia, Wayne County, New York. Their children:

William (????)

Arthur Charles (Oct 1867-1938) — m. Elsie Blanche Cook about 1893

Frank V. (23 Dec 1869-10 Mar 1895)

Ida May “May” (3 Dec 1872-3 Apr 1947) — m. George Wells in 1893; divorced

From 7 Sep 1864 to 4 Jun 1865, Ezekiel served as a private in Company B of the 111th New York Infantry Regiment. He and Rebecca remained in New York into the 1870s, and their children were born there. The 1880 census showed them in Eidsvold, Lyon County, Minnesota. The 1885 state census, which turned Ezekiel into Edward and gave his ethnicity as “Canadian”, placed them in Burton, Yellow Medicine County. In 1890, Ezekiel showed up in the veterans census for Wergeland, Yellow Medicine County. By 1900 they were back in Lyon County. In 1914, Rebecca died in Marshall, Lyon County, Minnesota. She’s buried in Marshall Cemetery. Her death record referred to Ezekiel as “Comrade E. Hinckley”. It also named all four of her children, although I have found no record for William. In 1915, Ezekiel moved to South Dakota to live with son Arthur. The 1925 state census found him there, living in Sioux Falls. Ezekiel died in 1928, and is buried with Rebecca.

William Riley Hinkley (1839-1862)

William died in 1862, cause undetermined. He is buried in Madrid Village Cemetery.

Sarah Aspenwall Hinkley (1842-1901)

Sarah married James Wheeler Haines (29 Jun 1840-22 Nov 1912) from New Hampshire in 1867. They lived in Rangeley, Franklin County. They had six children, two of whom died young:

Ida E. (Jan 1868-28 Oct 1945) — m. George M. Kempton about 1886

George S. P. (22 Apr 1869-15 Feb 1874)

Ada Mae (25 Mar 1871-20 Feb 1950) — m. Dexter Emons Lamb in 18xx

William H. (12 Mar 1873-10 Sep 1874)

George W. (1876-1938) — m. Blanche E. Gile on 25 Dec 1900

Winnie E. (1879-7 Apr 1925) — m. John Wilbur in 1900

Sarah died in 1901. She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. James died in 1912 and is buried with her.

Melissa Hinkley (1845-1931)

Melissa married the Reverend Dana Boardman Morrell (1842-9 Oct 1897) in 1864. They lived in Madrid, and had two children:

Bertha E. (Jun 1866-6 Apr 1888) — m. Edwin J. Berry in 1883

Albert Adelbert “Delbert” (25 Jun 1868-10 Feb 1951) — m. Sadie F. Lufkin in 1893; m. Lettie M. Wilber in 1904; m. Emma Grant Townsend in 1925

Dana died in 1897, and is buried in Madrid Village Cemetery. In 1900, widowed, Melissa was sharing a house in Madrid with son Delbert and his son Harland. In 1910, Harland was still there but Delbert had moved on. By 1930, Melissa was back to staying with Delbert. She died in 1931 and is buried with Dana.

George Dana “Dana” Hinkley (1847-1916)

Dana has his own entry in the family tree.

Clara Etta Hinkley (1850-1875)

Clara married Edgar Calden (1853-1877) in 1871. They had just one child:

Vivian M. (17 Apr 1874-after 1940)

Clara died in 1875, and is buried in Madrid Village Cemetery. Edgar died two years later.

In 1880, daughter Vivian was living with grandparents Joseph and Polly Hinkley in Madrid. By 1900, Vivian had moved to Boston, where she was lodging with the Prescott family. She lived in Boston until at least 1940, worked as a dressmaker, and apparently never married – although she had long-time female lodgers, including a book-keeper named Harriette Wheeler listed in 1920 as “partner”. April 1929 immigration records showed Vivian returning from Southampton, England aboard the S.S. Montclare and disembarking in Quebec. She gave her address as 39 Huntingdon Avenue, Boston, Massachusetts.

Florence Maria Hinkley (1852-1928)

Florence married Lewis C. Witham (1848-1 Jun 1906) in 1868. They lived in Madrid. Their children:

Clara O. (Sep 1870-28 May 1898) — m. George B. Batchelder

Elinor C. ()

one other

The 1880 census, which showed Florence on the same page as sister Melissa and family, listed children Clara (9), Carrie A. (5), Elverna F. (2), and Joseph H. (0). In 1900, the household included children Joseph, Charles, Lizzie, and George, Florence’s widower father Joseph (87), and her grandson Ralph B. Batchelder (11), son of Clara. It noted that she had nine children, six still living, indicating that Carrie and Elinor had died as well as Clara. Lewis died in 1906. In the 1920 census, Florence was living in Dixfield, Oxford County with the family of her married daughter Elizabeth. Florence died in 1928 and is buried in Madrid Village Cemetery.
