Alonzo (3 Oct 1834-29 Apr 1912) — m. Lucy Ann Ellis on 19 Jan 1867

Samuel was born in Madrid, Maine to Miller Hinkley and Rachel Whitney.

Abbie was born in Avon, Franklin County, Maine, one of 11 children of Joseph Hosea Dunham and Abigail Bates from Plymouth County, Massachusetts.

Samuel and Abbie married on 22 Apr 1811 in Avon, Franklin County, Maine.

Samuel was a blacksmith. He and Abigail lived in Madrid, and all their children were born there. Samuel died in 1839, aged just 50. Like his parents, he is buried in Dunham Cemetery, Madrid.

The 1850 census in Madrid showed son Ezekiel (39) as head of house. Ezekiel’s mother Abigail (56) and wife Abigail (34) were both there, plus siblings Samuel (22), George D. (18), and Alonzo (15), and Ezekiel’s children Oren (12), Lucy A. (10), and Charles D. (4). A trader named John Hankerson (64) was lodging with them. The same census page showed son Albert (24) living nearby with wife Henrietta (22) and daughter Francilla (1 month).

In 1860, Abigail (65) was still living with Ezekiel and his family. John Hankerson was still there too.

Abigail lived on until 1878. She is buried with Samuel in Dunham Cemetery.

Dunham Cemetery is also called Dunham Burial Ground. It’s on Reed’s Mill Road, Madrid, Franklin County, Maine. Reed’s Mill Road sprawls all over the place, squiggling around to the east of Phillips to run into Toothaker Pond Road. The cemetery is not nearly so far, though. From Route 4 passing through Madrid, turn onto the one small bridge north across the Sandy River. This is Reed’s Mill Road. Follow it for maybe two miles. The cemetery is on the left at the junction with Winslow Pond Road.

Children

Miller W. Hinkley (1812-1890)

Miller, like his father, was a blacksmith. He married Violetta Eastman Whitney (5 Jul 1813-24 Oct 1859) in 1831. They lived in Madrid, near many relatives. Their children were:

Ora King (25 Jul 1832-3 Nov 1898) — m. Adaline Moore on 11 Mar 1853; m. Annie L. Sparks

Eben B. (3 Oct 1834-28 Jul 1916) — m. Vesta G. Sprague

Lincoln (Dec 1854-19 Aug 1857)

Miller W., Jr. (~1858-9 Sep 1887) — prob. m. Eva M. Cook on 20 Aug 1881

Violetta died in 1859. The 1860 census showed Miller, now a widower, with five of the six youngest children still at home. I don’t know whether the three girls married or died during the 1860s, but by the 1870 census, only Miller, Jr. remained with his father. Also there was Sarah E. White Hinkley (~1841-????), Miller’s second wife, although the census didn’t identify her as such. The 1880 census did. Miller died in 1890, and is buried with Violetta in the Dunham Cemetery in Madrid, along with sons Cornelius and Lincoln. No idea what became of Sarah.

Joseph Dunham Hinkley (1813-1901)

Joseph has his own entry in the family tree.

Ezekiel Hinkley (1815-1892)

Ezekiel married another Abigail, Abigail Lake (26 Jul 1821-27 Mar 1883), in 1837. They remained in Madrid, and Ezekiel’s mother lived with them. Children were:

Orren (27 Sep 1837-3 Mar 1926) — m. Myra Sprague on 10 Nov 1864

Lucy Anna (6 Mar 1840-29 Aug 1875) — m. Albion S. Sprague on 5 Dec 1867

Mary Lestina (10 Jul 1851-1930) — m. Silverio Sprague on 22 Jan 1870

Laura E. (23 Nov 1856-9 Nov 1923) — m. Riley Frank Cook on 15 Jun 1873

Arvilla Helena (22 Apr 1858-5 May 1903) — m. Moses W. Harden on 27 Feb 1878

By 1880, it was down to just Ezekiel and Abigail. Abbie died in 1883 and Ezekiel in 1892. They are buried in Madrid Village Cemetery.

Abigail Dunham Hinkley (1819-1892)

Abigail married Levi Lake (1815-1883) on 28 Oct 1835, when she was not quite 16. So we have an Abigail Lake becoming Abigail Hinkley, and an Abigail Hinkley becoming Abigail Lake. They lived at first in Madrid, later in Avon and Rangeley. Their children:

Eliza Ann (5 May 1837-????)

Samuel (1840-????)

Asa Hinkley (Nov 1842-16 Apr 1905) — m. Hannah J. Stewart in 1867

Lovina (1845-????)

Albert M. H. (1846-8 May 1865)

Rachel H. (1848-????)

Mary Huntoon (1850-22 Dec 1898) — m. Henry H. Lake

Josiah (1855-1939) — m. Nellie A. Nile

Alphonzo (27 Feb 1858-1934) — m. Sarah Bell Stuart on 23 Sep 1883

Chaney W. (1860-1952)

Levi died in 1883, and Abigail in 1892. Like Levi’s parents, they are buried in Madrid Village Cemetery.

John William Hinkley (1821-1883)

John married Aurilla Toothaker Lake (~1828-13 Apr 1875), daughter of Ebenezer Lake and Sally Aspenwall, on 2 Jun 1842. They remained in Madrid. They had eight children, all boys:

Warren N. (9 May 1847-10 Apr 1916) — m. Hattie Emily Hutchins in 1864

Gilman Hobbs (24 Jun 1848-18 Oct 1921) — m. Cynthia E. Berry in 1899

Seldom Been (13 Nov 1851-25 Nov 1937) — m. Maria Sarah Whitham on 28 Jul 1878

Hezekiah (13 Jan 1854-6 Apr 1942) — m. Susie A. Libby Bachelder on 25 Jun 1898

Lorestin/Laresten/Lorester P. (24 Mar 1856-22 Apr 1890) — m. Ruby Ella Tyler on 6 Sep 1884

Liberty Newman (1862-by 1894) — m. Olive Jennie Silver

John Andrew (1869-1952) — m. Minnie Isabella Washburn on 17 Jan 1891

John died in 1883, and is buried with Aurilla in Madrid Village Cemetery.

Albert Midkif Hinkley (1825-1894)

Albert married Henrietta Fairbanks (1829-1876) in 1849. Known children:

Francilla (~1850-1872)

Maria (~1853-????)

James Henry (~1858-8 Nov 1906) — m. Mary ??? in 187x

On 20 Sep 1876, following Henrietta’s death, Albert married Matilda Keene (1842-1892). They apparently had one child:

Rosa (1878-????) — poss. m. William Buchanan on 2 Dec 1899

The 1880 census showed two households in Franklin County headed by an Albert Hinkley and wife Matilda – one in Madrid, and one in Strong. Daughter Rosa was at the house in Strong, and the Madrid household included two nieces and two nephews. Was this a major coincidence of names and ages, or did the census just count them twice? Matilda died in 1892. Albert died in 1894 in Kingfield, Maine, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips with Francilla and both wives.

Samuel Hinkley, Jr. (1827-1885)

Samuel married Louisa Harrington (13 Jul 1837-11 Oct 1909) on 21 May 1853. They had no children. They were living in Madrid in 1860, and in Gardiner, Kennebec County by 1880. Samuel died in 1885, and is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Gardiner. Louisa died in 1909 and is buried with him.

Rachel Hinkley (1830-1913)

Rachel married Samuel Charles Huntington (Nov 1831-1905) in 1855. Children:

George F. (~1859-21 Jul 1877)

Alonzo Leland (3 Oct 1861-29 Nov 1923) — m. Minnie Ethel Wing on 7 Oct 1894

Effie G. (8 Dec 1864-1925) — m. Lewis Carr Wing on 6 May 1883; m. Frank Nelson Dunham on 4 Mar 1886

Rachel, Samuel, and their son George are buried in Dunham Cemetery, Madrid.

George Russell Hinkley (1833-1911)

George married Louisa Walker Lake (~1839-186x) on 13 Apr 1854. They lived in Madrid. Known children:

Wesley Eugene (3 Apr 1856-29 Jan 1935) — m. Addie E. Strout on 16 Jun 1894

Loretta (8 Jul 1858-????) — m. Franklin S. Chandler on 4 Apr 1875

La Roy Lafayette (4 Feb 1861-23 Oct 1937)

William R. (1 Jun 1863-30 Nov 1932) — m. Mary Leona Brooks

Louisa apparently died in the 1860s. George married Rachel Davenport (8 Aug 1832-31 Mar 1915) on 16 Apr 1871. They lived in Phillips, and had no children. In the 1880 census, Rachel’s older sister Jane was living with them. George died in 1911, and is buried in Byron Cemetery, Phillips. Rachel died in 1915 and is buried with him.

Alonzo Hinkley (1834-1912)

Alonzo married Lucy Ann Ellis (26 Mar 1849-30 May 1931) in the late 1860s. They lived in Madrid until at least 1880 before moving to Rangeley. They had two children I know of:

Ada Gustie (20 Oct 1867-25 Aug 1950) — m. Hiram Edgar Hinkley on 20 Oct 1883; m. Frank H. Kempton on 13 May 1898

Riley Frank (7 Nov 1877-1958) — m. Jennie Edith Gilman in 1903; m. Lucinda Lena Tibbetts on 13 Sep 1911

Alonzo died in 1912. He and Lucy are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley, as are both of their children.
