Abner TOOTHAKER (15 Apr 1815-21 Mar 1880) +
Phoebe WILBUR (10 Jun 1819-20 Jan 1893)

John Raymond (8 Jun 1839-18 Jan 1906) — m. Esther M. Hoar on 29 Nov 1860

Mary Jane (2 Jun 1843-23 Mar 1879) — m. Hiram Andrew Hunter about 1860

Milia Ann (17 May 1845-1867) — m. John F. Church in 186x

Julia Ann (28 Aug 1848-30 Apr 1942) — m. Nathan Ulysses Hinkley about 1867

Charles H. (4 Dec 1851-10 Apr 1920) — m. Anna L. Ellis in 1871

Clara Luella (16 Jun 1852-19 Apr 1929) — m. Newell Perkins Noble on 27 Apr 1879

Abner was reportedly born in Rangeley, Maine, the youngest child of John Toothaker and Deborah Raymond. If he was born in Rangeley, he was one of the first European children to have that distinction, although by 1870 he was saying he was born in Massachusetts. Strictly speaking, all of Maine was Massachusetts in 1815, so perhaps he was just being pedantic.

Phoebe was born in Rangeley as well, the seventh of 11 children of Ethan Wilbur from Rhode Island and Phebe Libby from Buxton, York County, Maine.

Abner and Phoebe married either in Rangeley or in Phillips on 26 Oct 1837. The 1840 census listed them in Rangeley, on the same page as Abner’s parents and several of his brothers. Abner was a lumbermill owner and operator as well as a farmer, according to a 1930 letter by his great-grandson Lyn Toothaker. He also listed himself as a lumberman in the 1870 census.

In 1850 and 1860, Abner’s widowed mother Deborah was living with them. The 1860 census also listed an unexplained 8-year-old boy named Charles Heath. In 1870, the household included John F. Church (1841-1906), the widowed husband of their late daughter Milia, with his children Millie (3) and Edith (1), plus a domestic servant named Permelia Walker (38).

Abner died in 1880. In that year, the census showed Phoebe living with daughter Clara and her family. Milia’s daughters Eva M. (13) and Edith T. (11) Church were there too.

Phoebe died in 1893. She and Abner are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley.

Children

John Raymond Toothaker (1839-1906)

John has his own entry in the family tree.

Mary Jane Toothaker (1843-1879)

Mary Jane married Hiram Andrew Hunter (22 Sep 1836-30 Mar 1886) in 1860 or 1861. They had two children:

Rosie G. (16 Sep 1861-11 Mar 1940) — m. Franklin J. Toothaker in 1883

Clifford Belcher (Jan 1868-6 Dec 1935) — m. Minnie Etta Fairbanks in 1885

Mary Jane died in 1879, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Hiram married Ada Louise Kelley (1848-1914) the following year. He died in 1886 and is buried with Mary Jane.

Milia Ann Toothaker (1845-1867)

Milia married John F. Church (Nov 1840-13 Aug 1906), son of William Church and Margaret Clark, in the 1860s. They had two children:

Eva Millie (~1866-????)

Edith T. (~1868-1918) — never married

Milia died in 1867, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. In 1870, John and the girls were living with Milia’s parents. In the 1880 census, the girls were living with their married Aunt Clara and grandmother Phoebe in Phillips. John had moved to Harpswell, Cumberland County, where he worked as a fisherman. He died in 1906, and is buried with Milia. Edith died in 1918, and is buried with her parents. Her reported year of birth, 1868, is almost certainly a mistake. No idea what became of Eva.

Julia Ann Toothaker (1848-1942)

Julia married Nathan U. Hinkley (1844-24 Dec 1901) from Avon, son of Hinkley ancestor Ebenezer Hinkley and his second wife Sophronia Butler. See the Hinkley-Humphrey family page for details.

Charles (Heath) Toothaker (1851-1920)

I think Charles was adopted. He seems to have been the child who showed up in the 1860 census as Charles Heath, and who by 1870 was Charles H. Toothaker and living with brother John Raymond Toothaker in Rangeley. He married Anna Lois Ellis (29 Nov 1853-19 May 1934) in 1871. They lived in Rangeley. Known children:

Maurice T. (1876-1967) — m. Bertha Harnden; m. Wilma M. Hackett on 23 Oct 1909

Robie E. (4 Aug 1882-1939) — m. Emma L. Ryerson Morey Porter on 16 Aug 1919

Otto Ray (20 Feb 1888-28 Sep 1889)

Erwin Raymond (7 Apr 1893-31 Jun 1973) — m. Esther Loraine Bailey on 31 May 1921

Dolly Faye (25 Feb 1897-18 Jun 1962) — m. William H. Harnden on 8 Nov 1913; m. Ralph Farnum on 15 Jan 1928

Charles died in 1920, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Rangeley. Anna died in 1934 and is buried with him. Their son Otto is there too.

Clara Luella Toothaker (1852-1929)

Clara married Newell Perkins Noble (14 Jun 1855-1942) in 1879. They lived in Phillips. They had five children:

Jay Laurence (1879-1896)

Julia Agnes (1881-1895)

Marian Allene (6 Apr 1883-1970) — m. Thomas S. Allen on 1 Sep 1911

Lew Maurice (23 Sep 1893-29 Oct 1953) — m. Helen McGraff

Kathleen (25 Sep 1896-17 Jul 1990) — m. Charles Eben Toothaker on 23 Jun 1922

Clara died in 1929, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. Newell died in 1942 and is buried with her. The gravestone also lists the four eldest children, but it’s unclear whether they’re actually all buried there. Kathleen is buried near her parents in the same cemetery.
