Joshua LAKE (12 May 1760-?1859?) +
Sarah DILL (10 Apr 1766-14 Oct 1845)

Ebenezer (13 Jun 1786-10 Jan 1862) — m. Sally Aspenwall on 18 Oct 1807; m. Isabella Blethin on 10 Nov 1825

Stephen H. (9 Jul 1788-27 Jul 1880) — m. Mehitable Bubler on 22 Apr 1810; m. Cordelia Lowell on 2 Nov 1840; m. Margaret Forbus on 5 Apr 1857

Sarah (18 Sep 1790-after 1850) — m. Stephen Bennett on 21 Jul 1811

Josiah Dill (18 Apr 1793-7 Oct 1837) — m. Lydia Lovejoy on 18 Aug 1814

Mercy (24 Mar 1795-????) — m. William S. Hutcherson on 28 Oct 1823

John Dill (30 Jun 1797-15 Nov 1884) — m. Lucy Roberts on 5 Nov 1820; Rachel A. Golder on 25 Nov 1844

Joshua was born in North Yarmouth, Cumberland County, Maine, north of Portland. He was the eldest son of Benjamin Lake, Jr. (22 Dec 1732-by 1790) of North Yarmouth and Lydia Hutton (7 Sep 1735-179x) from Boston, who married in North Yarmouth on 22 Jan 1759. His grandparents were Benjamin and Mercy Lake.

Sarah was born in Yarmouth proper on the coast, the sixth of a reported ten children to John Dill (1738-1810) and Sarah Coffin (1740-1804).

Joshua and Sarah married on 8 Jan 1786 in Topsham, Sagadahoc County, Maine. Note that all of these events were registered in Lewiston rather than where they took place. Note also that all references to Maine with dates prior to 1820 are shorthand for “the part of the colony and state of Massachusetts that later became the state of Maine”.

In the 1790 and 1800 censuses, the family were living in Lewiston, which at the time was part of Lincoln County. I can find no census record of Joshua and Sarah after 1800. The Joshua Lakes in Phillips and in Stetson for the 1840 census were much younger men.

Sarah died in 1845, and Joshua supposedly in 1859, although I’m skeptical of the latter date in particular because A) he would have been 98 or 99, which is pretty rare, and B) he’s nowhere in the 1850 census. They’re believed to be buried in Riverside Cemetery, Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine.

Children

Ebenezer Lake (1786-1862)

Ebenezer has his own entry in the family tree.

Stephen H. Lake (1788-1880)

Stephen married Mehitable Bubler (14 May 1790-26 Mar 1840) from Bowdoin in 1810. They had nine children:

Joseph (16 Aug 1812-????)

Martha (4 Dec 1814-????)

Melinda Blanche (18 Dec 1816-6 Feb 1907) — m. Johnson Cunningham on 10 Apr 1861

John (1 Aug 1819-????)

William H. (8 Oct 1822-5 Jun 1861) — m. Delana Goff Dill on 22 Jun 1845

Joshua (4 Jan 1825-Apr 1825)

Almira D. (24 Jan 1827-????)

Stephen (5 May 1828-20 Jan 1896) — m. Olive H. Locklin on 10 Mar 1850; m. Minna L. Hodgkins on 11 Mar 1890

Mehitabel Frances (5 Apr 1833-27 Aug 1907) — m. Albertus A. Laughton on 19 Oct 1851; m. William Woods on 28 Feb 1873; m. William Sylvester Hodgkins on 31 May 1890

Mehitable Sr. died in early 1840. Later that year, Stephen married Cordelia Lowell (1817-1850). Their children:

Henry Harrison (17 Oct 1838-2 Mar 1908) — m. Mariah Kenney on 10 Jul 1864; m. Mary Huntoon Lake in 186x; m. Susan Lillian Searles in 1899

William H. (1841-????)

Sarah (Feb 1844-11 Oct 1946) — m. Daniel Crooker Lapham on 10 Dec 1877

Dorcas (1846-1848)

Emmerett (22 Aug 1848-30 Apr 1916) — m. Aaron Parker Glazier about 1874; m. Charles H. French on 9 Jan 1892

The 1850 census showed the blended family in Litchfield, Kennebec County, with Mehitable’s children Melinda, Almira, and Mehitable Jr., and Cordelia’s children William H., Sarah, and Emeret (sic). Cordelia died later that year. Stephen married Margaret Forbus (1798-1872) in 1857. Unsurprisingly, they had no children.

In 1870, Stephen (81) was in New Sharon, Franklin County with wife Mary H. (76). Since there’s no other record of his marrying, I assume this was Margaret Forbus with her name and age somewhat off. Margaret died a couple years later.

In 1880, Stephen, widowed, was living with his married daughter Melinda in Richmond, Sagadahoc County. He died later that year, and is buried in Richmond.

Sarah Lake (1790-after 1850)

Sarah married Stephen Bennett (~1792-????) in Pownal, Cumberland County, Maine on 21 Jul 1811. The children:

unknown girl (181x-????)

unknown boy (181x-????)

unknown girl (181x-????)

unknown girl (181x-????)

Nathaniel L. (22 Mar 1823-16 Oct 1896) — m. Sarah ??? in 185x; m. Eliza Jane Witham on 1 Nov 1874

James A. (29 Feb 1832-27 Aug 1890) — m. Caroline A. Day on 5 Oct 1854

Mary A. (~1836-????)

The family settled in the Auburn-Lewiston area, which variously showed up as Cumberland, Lincoln, or Androscoggin County. I don’t know whether they moved, or the county lines did. The 1820 census for Lewiston, Lincoln County listed them with three girls and one boy all under age 10. 1830 and 1840 censuses showed a Stephen Bennett household in Cumberland County, but the ages bounced enough that I don’t trust the information.

In the 1850 census for Auburn, Cunberland County, Stephen (57) and Sarah (supposedly 56) had children Nathaniel (27), James (18), and Mary A. (14) at home.

Stephen and Sarah probably died in the 1850s, but there’s no record. In the 1860 census, sons Nathaniel and James, both married, were living either with or next door to one another in Auburn. Nathaniel apparently had no children. Can’t find daughter Mary.

Josiah Dill Lake (1793-1837)

Josiah married Lydia Lovejoy (19 Jun 1796-????) on 18 Aug 1814 in Avon, Franklin County. She was the daughter of Hezekiah Lovejoy and Hannah Atkins. They had at least five children:

Oren B. (10 Mar 1815-11 Aug 1826)

Louisa (22 Sep 1816-????)

Davis (4 Jul 1818-27 Feb 1819)

unknown girl (182x-????)

unknown girl (182x-????)

The 1830 census for New Sharon, Kennebec County listed two John Lakes of similar age next door to one another. I think one of them was actually Josiah; he and his wife had two daughters, one age 5-10 and one age 10-15. I assume the older one was Louisa.

Josiah died in 1837, and is buried in Weeks Mills Cemetery, New Sharon, Franklin County (previously Kennebec County). Sons Oren and Davis are buried there as well. The 1840 census for New Sharon showed a Mrs. Lydia Lake as head of household, with two girls in their teens.

Mercy Lake (1795-????)

Mercy married William S. Hutchinson (~1795-????) on 28 Oct 1823 in Pownal, Cumberland County, Maine. The marriage license rendered his name as Hutcherson. They appear to have had at least three children, but I have no names:

unknown boy (182x-????)

unknown boy (182x-????)

unknown boy (182x-????)

The 1830 census for Pownal listed the household of William S. Hutchinson as a man in his 30s, a woman in her twenties ahem, and three boys under age ten. They were next door to Eleazar Lake (~1765-19 Sep 1850), Mercy’s uncle. Can’t trace them after that. There were lots of William Hutchinsons.

John Dill Lake (1797-1884)

John, born in Lewiston, married Lucy Roberts (~1799-?1841?) in 1820 in Bath, Sagadahoc County, Maine. They had at least one child:

Lucy Ann (16 Nov 1821-11 Feb 1907) — m. Daniel Collins Luce on 1 Oct 1840

The 1830 census for New Sharon, Kennebec County showed John D. Lake next door to a man of similar age named John Lake, no D. I think this was an erroneous listing for John’s brother Josiah. Anyway, John and his wife, in their 30s, had a boy and girl age 10 to 15, and a girl age 5 to 9. Given that they had been married just ten years, I don’t know who the two older kids were.

John’s wife Lucy died probably in 1841; there’s a hard-to-read gravestone in Weeks Mills Cemetery, New Sharon, Franklin County that I think is hers even though year of death is transcribed as 1811. John married Rachel A. Golder (~1815-????) in 1844. They had a reported four children:

Amanda Marie (15 Feb 1842-2 Dec 1922) — m. Orrin Fuller Voter on 28 Nov 1863

John William (~1846-????) — m. Emma Sweenemore on 12 May 1873

Joseph Golder (Aug 1850-13 Dec 1915) — m. Almeda H. Grennell in 1870; m. Elizabeth Udivelle Chapman on 12 Jul 1887

Isabel (~1854-29 Mar 1896) — never married

The 1850 census showed John (49) and Rachel (33) in New Sharon, Franklin County with children Amanda (8), John (4), and Joseph G. (0), plus Rachel’s 67-year-old mother. By 1860 they were in New Vineyard, Franklin County with four children – Amanda, John, Joseph, and Isabel – and Rachel’s mother was claiming to be 83.

During the Civil War, son John W. served in Company G, 16th Maine Volunteer Infantry, reaching the rank of corporal.

The 1880 census had John and Rachel living in Richmond, Sagadahoc County, no kids. John died in 1884, and is buried in Cotton Cemetery, Richmond. Daughter Isabel was later buried there as well. No trace of Rachel after 1880.
