Moses was the sixth child of record born to Moses Hodsdon I (7 Apr 1702-4 Feb 1782) and Sarah Thompson (1702-28 Aug 1781), who married on 4 Jul 1723 and settled in Berwick, York County, Maine. He was named for an older brother who died young, a naming practice he too was to adopt.

Dorcas was the daughter of Ebenezer Lord (1719-1811) and Martha Emery (1726-1773), also from Berwick.

Moses and Dorcas married, lived, and died in Berwick. They’re buried in Chadbourn Cemetery, North Berwick.

Lineage

The first new-world Hodsdon was one Nicholas Hodsdon, probably from the town of Hoddesdon a few miles north of London. He arrived in Hingham, Massachusetts around 1635. He married his cousin Esther Wines on 6 Dec 1639. They had six children. After her death, he moved to Watertown, Massachusetts and married married Elizabeth Wincoll (1628-Jul 1686), widow of John Needham. They had five more children.

By 1655 they had moved to Old Kittery, an area covering both sides of the Piscataqua River that divides what are now Maine and New Hampshire. They lived a short time at Quamphegan and later near Birch Point Brook in South Berwick. In 1659, Nicholas and several others were ordered to Boston on charges of “entertaining Quakers”, to which Nicholas pleaded not guilty. He claimed he hadn’t known they were Quakers.

Some accounts claim this was the same Nicholas Hodsdon mentioned in an old letter as being killed by Indians in 1704 in Wells, Maine. However, that man was a militia soldier, an unlikely job for a man in his nineties. Our Nicholas probably died well before that time, and is probably buried at his family homestead in Kittery, York County, Maine, where his second wife is buried.

Line of descent from Nicholas to the parents of Moses II:

Nicholas HODSDON or HODGDON (~1611-????) + Esther WINES (1621-29 Nov 1647)

Israel HODSDON, Sr. (~19 Jul 1646-Jul 1675 or 1696) + Ann THOMPSON (1653-1727)

Israel HODSDON, Jr. (1674-1750) + Ann WINGATE (18 Feb 1668-21 Jan 1740)

Moses HODSDON I (7 Apr 1702-4 Feb 1782) + Sarah THOMPSON (1702-28 Aug 1781)
