Joseph Jackson (7 Aug 1832-4 Nov 1913) — m. Nancy Ann Haines

Hannah Jane (12 Apr 1834-2 Dec 1904) — m. Matthias Haines on 25 Nov 1858

Nathaniel Brackett (22 May 1839-23 Jul 1927) — m. Hannah E. ????

Esther M. (18 May 1841-7 Nov 1911) — m. John Raymond Toothaker on 29 Nov 1860

James H. (5 Jun 1843-????)

Lois Ellen (Dec 1845-18 Jan 1909) — m. Calvin Moore

Robin Marinda (9 Apr 1847-Feb 1858)

Joseph was born in Franklin County, Maine, the son of Luther Hoar from Middlesex County, Massachusetts and Eunice Lakeman from Essex County, Massachusetts.

Hannah was born in Phillips, Maine, the daughter of James Brackett and Mary Lunt, both from Falmouth, Cumberland County, Maine.

Joseph and Hannah married on 29 Nov 1827 in Phillips.

In 1840, they were living in Dallas Plantation, Franklin County.

The 1850 census listed Joseph (47) and Hannah (50) with children Lois (19), Joseph J. (17), Hannah J. (15), Luther (12), Esther (9), James H. (6), and Lois Ellen (4). The older “Lois” was probably a mistaken reference to Eunice. I don’t know where Nathaniel and Robin were.

The 1860 census showed them in Rangeley: Joseph (57) and Hannah (59), with children Luther (22), Nathaniel B. (19), Esther M. (18), James H. (16), and Lois E. (14), plus Esther’s son Lyman L. (7 months). Son Joseph was next door with his wife and two children.

At some point in the 1860s, the family changed their last name to Nile. I guess they were tired of the jokes.

The 1870 census showed Joseph (67) and Hannah (70) NILE, thank you very much, still in Rangeley. With them was 19-year-old Almon Berrett, listed as a farm laborer.

Hannah died in 1880 in Rangeley. Joseph died the following year. They are buried in Nile Cemetery at 2029 Main Street, Rangeley.

Children

Eunice B. Hoar (1828-1905)

Eunice married William A. Haley, Sr. (1826-21 Jul 1894) from Rangeley. They lived in Greenvale Plantation, Franklin County, Maine. Known children:

Mary Ellen (14 Jul 1848-6 Jan 1915) — m. George W. Oakes

Lois Elvenah (8 Dec 1849-Jan 1869) — m. George W. Oakes

William Alvin, Jr. (10 Aug 1853-1926) — m. Eunice Elvenah Dunham

Asenath or Cenath J. (7 Mar 1859-5 Dec 1915) — m. George H. Snowman

James Emery (1862-1943) — m. Cora T. Welch

Chauncy E. (Sep 1873-after 1940) — m. Rose Geneva Horne on 21 Mar 1908

Lois E. (1876-19 Aug 1877)

There is a record of one Albin Q. Haley born to the couple in Jul 1853, but this conflicts with the date for William Jr. There is also a record of a Joseph H. Haley born to them in 1840 when Eunice would have been 11 or 12, which I hope is a mistake. In 1870, there were some Quimbys living with them. William died in 1894. Eunice died in 1905 in Sandy River, Franklin County of chronic interstitial nephritis. Their burial locations are undetermined.

Joseph Jackson Hoar/Nile, Jr. (1832-1913)

Joseph married Nancy Ann Haines (13 Oct 1838-6 Aug 1913) from Campton, New Hampshire. He also took the surname Nile in the 1860s. Known children:

Blanche Ella (11 Jun 1859-20 May 1928) — m. Gorham R. Hardy about 1876

Nettie Ann (1860-17 Aug 1905) — m. Nahusse G. Bubier

Nellie N. (1865-9 Sep 1867)

In 1860, they were living in Rangeley next to Joseph’s parents, and had an unexplained child named Charles Boodry (7) living with them. They were still there in 1870. The census didn’t find them after 1870, but probably around 1882 they moved to Rowley, Essex County, Massachusetts, where Joseph’s grandmother Eunice Lakeman was from. Daughter Nettie died in Rowley in 1905. Nancy died there in 1913, and Joseph died a few months later. Their burial locations are undetermined. Daughter Blanche, whose husband was the great-grandson of Luther Hoar Sr. and Eunice Lakeman and therefore her second cousin, is buried in Rowley Burial Ground, Rowley.

Hannah Jane Hoar (1834-1904)

Hannah married Matthias Haines (13 Oct 1835-2 Dec 1904) from Campton, New Hampshire in 1858. They lived for more than 20 years in Rangeley, until at least 1880 when Hannah’s mother died. They had nine children:

Eva Betsey (1859-1942) — m. Laforest Aaron Beedy about 1880

Josephine C. (1860-19xx)

Hannah B. (18 Jan 1862-14 Jan 1934) — m. Ira Toothaker Wing on 10 Nov 1891

Joseph M. (1866-1936) — m. Augusta H. Brawn

Amy G. (1868-1952) — m. Fred Dresser on 7 Jul 1886

Angie Sally (4 Mar 1870-20 Dec 1927) — m. James Melvin Doyen in 1885

Lyman Lester (1871-after 1940) — m. Elva Elizabeth McAlister on 12 Feb 1907

Leon Forest (1876-1934) — m. Mertie L. Davenport on 6 Jul 1899

Harvey James (1880-1950) — m. Rose Ella Virgin on 15 Oct 1901

Sometime after 1880, Hannah and her husband moved to Mexico, Oxford County, Maine. They were killed in 1904 by a gas explosion at their home. They are buried in Baptist Church Cemetery, Mexico, as are several of their children.

Luther Hoar/Nile (1837-1897)

Luther married Belle Peary Abbott (4 Apr 1849-13 Sep 1888). They lived in Rangeley. Their children, who also took the surname Nile:

unnamed boy (4 Feb 1868-4 Feb 1868)

Victor Arthur (~1870-1 Jan 1897)

Martin L. (23 Nov 1871-19 Sep 1952) — m. Minnie E. Berry on 1 Oct 1892

Joseph Abbott (25 Aug 1873-30 Dec 1964) — m. Mary E. Howe in 1900

Sandy Brackett (24 May 1875-2 Dec 1905)

Hortense Belle Gertrude (1877-1961) — m. Frank Sampson on 3 Jun 1896; divorced; m. Brice Evans Pease on 15 Aug 1907

unnamed girl (13 Oct 1880-13 Oct 1880)

Vinton Irwin (24 Oct 1883-22 May 1903)

Lois Pearl (1887-?23 Apr 1952?) — m. Locke Howard Pease on 25 Sep 1907; m. Charles J. Schneider on 30 Jan 1913

Two of the children, Joseph and Sandy, were doctors. Luther died in 1897 in the West End area of Portland, Maine. He is buried as Luther Nile in Nile Cemetery, Rangeley.

Nathaniel Brackett Hoar/Nile (1839-1927)

Nathaniel enlisted in the Union army on 23 Feb 1864. The enlistment record described him as 5'9", brown hair, blue eyes. Like the others, he changed his last name to Nile. He married Hannah E. (24 Mar 1848-1 Jan 1905) from Maine. They seem to have had just one child:

Inza E. (21 Jul 1871-11 Feb 1912) — m. Leroy Shaner on 15 Mar 1890

Sometime after Inza’s birth, the family moved to California. The 1880 census showed them in Analy, Sonoma County, California. Voter records also listed Nathaniel in Santa Cruz County and Mendocino County, but in the 1900 census they were still in Analy. Daughter Inza married, but her husband died in 1898. Hannah died in 1905, Inza in 1912. Both are buried in Bloomfield Cemetery, Sonoma County. By 1920, Nathaniel was back in Maine, living with relatives in Phillips, Franklin County. He died there in 1927, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

Esther M. Hoar (1841-1911)

Esther has her own entry in the family tree.

James H. Hoar/Nile (1843-????)

There are no records for James after 1860.

Lois Ellen Hoar/Nile (1845-1909)

Lois married Calvin Moore (1842-1912). They lived in Rangeley, and later in Strong. Their children:

Lyman E. (1863-1940) — m. Elizabeth S. Tufts on 2 Apr 1892

Alice E. (1865-after 1930) — m. ??? Gotlander

Herbert L. (1867-1952) — m. Ella F. Moores on 12 Apr 1900

Milton L. (Mar 1871-31 Mar 1871)

Essie M. (Jul 1872-after 1930) — m. Guss H. Gotlander on 22 Sep 1894

Howard Linley (20 Dec 1875-after 1928) — m. Susie E. Sogrien on 20 Mar 1908; m. Esther L. Edgar on 12 Oct 1929

Burton Daymond (1889-1973) — m. Bertha Hazel Neal on 24 Nov 1910

Lillian E. (1891-after 1910)

Lois died in 1909 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Phillips. The 1910 census showed Calvin and three of the four youngest living in Strong. Calvin died in 1912 and is buried with Lois.

An unnamed daughter of this family – by the process of elimination, it can only have been Alice – married a Swedish man named Petersson in 1894 in Winslow, Kennebec County.

Robin Marinda Hoar (1847-1858)

Robin is a bit of a mystery. The only record of him is for his death in 1858. There is no birth record, and he didn’t appear in the 1850 census.
