John was born in Holland, son of John Bakeman, Sr. (1700-????) and Susanna Higley (1703-????), and grandson of John Higley (1749-1714) and Sarah Strong (1666-1739). The names indicate English rather than Dutch ancestry. Maybe his family were among the Puritans who weren’t in such a hurry to leave the Netherlands for the New World.

Christiana was born in Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine (some sources say Biddeford, York County) to John Smart (1720-1805) and Christiana Percy (1720-????). Her name is sometimes given as “Christian”, and that might have been the original form. She had a younger sister, Margaret, born 2 Apr 1746. Her family later lived in Georgetown, Sagadahoc County, Maine.

I don’t know when John and Christiana married. The list of children above is tentative. John later acquired “Esq.” after his name, which suggests he was a lawyer.

The 1790 census showed John and family living in Penobscot, Hancock County, Maine, with five children: one boy age 16+, three boys under 16, and three girls. Next door was the household of John Bakeman, Jr., with two children, a boy and a girl. Susanna and her husband were also living nearby.

John died in 1800 in the part of Brooksville called Cape Rosier, Hancock County, Maine. He’s buried in Bakeman Cemetery, Cape Rosier. Christiana died in 1818 and is buried with him.

Children

Susanna Bakeman (1762-1843)

Susanna has her own entry in the family tree.

John Bakeman (1763-1844)

John married Sarah Young (1768-22 Jul 1842). I have names for just two of their children:

others

Calvin (26 Jan 1798-27 Oct 1886) — m. Margaret ???; m. Nancy Twitchell on 10 Apr 1838

James Hervey (19 Jan 1809-21 Jan 1884) — m. Sarah J. Wentworth

John was a ship captain. The family lived in Castine. John died in 1844 and is buried in Indian Point Cemetery, Harborside, Hancock County, Maine.

Sarah Bakeman (1766-1848)

Sarah married Daniel Blake (1764-1833).

Christiana Bakeman (1768-1852)

Christiana married Andrew Webster (26 Apr 1769-17 Dec 1851), another sailing captain. They lived in Brooksville, Hancock County. They had at least one child:

Stillman (1803-24 Jul 1864)

They died in 1851 and 1852, and are buried in Magee Field Cemetery, Brooksville.

Hannah Osgood Bakeman (1771-1867)

Hannah married Jacob L. Morgan. They had children, but I don’t have details. In 1860 Hannah was living with the Osgood family in Waterville, Kennebec County, Maine. She died in 1867 and is buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville.

Francis E. Bakeman (1773-1826)

Francis married Anna Little Rogers (1787-1880).

William Henry Bakeman (1775-1839)

William married Lucy Alley (1788-18 Feb 1856) on 22 Jun 1806 in Penobscot, Hancock County. They lived in Brooksville. Known children:

William died in 1839, and is buried in Bakeman Cemetery, Cape Rosier, Hancock County.

Elizabeth “Betsy” Bakeman (1780-18xx)

Betsy married Joseph Mayo (1775-????) before the turn of the century. They lived in Brooksville. Their children:

Keleb Bateman (21 Aug 1799-????)

Alviner Artemis Adison (26 Mar 1822-????)

Anna (~1824-????) — (POSS. GRAND-DAUGHTER) m. Andrew Etheridge on 7 Mar 1835

The 1860 census showed Betsy, widowed, living with her married daughter or grand-daughter Anna Etheridge in Brooksville. There was a different Betsy Mayo who died in 1850 in Dexter, Penobscot County, but she was from Massachusetts.

Nancy Bakeman (1789-1882 or 1791-1875)

There was a Nancy Bakeman who married Andrew Blake (1802-1860) and lived in Brooksville. I’m not sure this was the right Nancy.
