Hannah LOCKLIN (1793-Nov 1875)

John Gardner (18 Oct 1812-2 Feb 1886) — m. Huldah Matilda Peary on 2 Apr 1835

David Blake (1 Mar 1816-24 Sep 1910) — m. Betsy C. Peary in 183x

Mary Ann (3 Jan 1820-17 Jun 1902) — m. John Chubb about 1838

Samuel (30 Jan 1824-24 Aug 1907) — m. Eunice W. Foster on 25 March 1846

Hannah R. or H. (1826-25 Mar 1884) — m. Thomas Abbott Byron on 29 Mar 1846

Caroline A. F. (11 Feb 1834-27 Nov 1894) — m. Matthias W. Darton on 20 Sep 1851

Richard was born in Tuftonboro Township, Carroll County, New Hampshire, the son of Samuel Abbott (1765-1823) and Anna Varney (1769-1850).

Hannah was born in Alton, Belknap County, New Hampshire to unknown parents. Her last name might also have been written Laughlin.

Richard and Hannah married on 23 Apr 1812 in Tuftonboro Township.

They remained in Tuftonboro at least until 1830, when the census listed the family as a couple in their thirties and five children: a boy age 15-19, a boy and girl age 10-14, a boy age 5-9, and a girl under 5. That accounts for all the named children.

In the 1830s, the family moved north to Franklin County, Maine, settling in Dallas Plantation near Rangeley. The 1840 census showed them there as a man in his fifties and a woman in her forties, with a boy and girl age 10-14 and a girl age 5-9 – Samuel, Hannah, and Caroline. Their immediate neighbors were the families of sons John and David, and the families of Moses Peary and Samuel Peary.

By 1850, Richard and Hannah were living with son John and family. Richard died the following year, and is buried in the Nile Cemetery in Rangeley.

Hannah went to stay with her daughter and namesake in Everett, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on the north side of Boston. The 1855 census showed her there. In 1860 she was living with her married daughter Mary Ann in Galveston, Texas. Don’t know where she was in 1870, but she clearly did return to Massachusetts. She died in 1875 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Children

John Gardner Abbott (1812-1886)

John has his own entry in the family tree.

David Blake Abbott (1816-1910)

David married Betsy C. Peary (Feb 1820-10 Dec 1905) from Denmark, Maine, sister of his brother John’s wife, in the late 1830s. In the 1840 census, he and Betsy were living next to his parents in Dallas Plantation, no children yet. They were still there in 1850. Known children:

Richard W. (5 Apr 1840-20 Mar 1932) — m. Flora R. Day in 186x; m. Ella Frances Walker on 4 Jul 1875

Huldah P. (1842-30 Jul 1864) — m. Emerson S. Phillips

John A. (1844-24 Sep 1864)

Solomon (1845-13 Sep 1864)

Eunice W. (5 May 1848-26 Nov 1927) — m. Thomas Boodry on 4 Sep 1864; m. Jesse Wilson Place on 11 Feb 1880

Laura (1850-19xx)

Charles E. P. (25 Feb 1852-25 Dec 1919)

Betsey Pearl (25 Feb 1854-7 Jul 1936) — m. Orren Tibbetts in 187x

Caroline A. D. (Jul 1856-20 Jul 1936) — m. William H. Ellis on 22 Mar 1874

Mae A. C. (Feb 1858-11 Apr 1891) — m. James S. Spaulding in 187x

David Blake, Jr. (16 Nov 1860-Jun 1945) — m. Emma Mae Hobbs on 1 Mar 1905

By 1860, the family had moved to Somerset County. David enlisted as a private with Company E, 13th Maine Infantry from 1861 to 1865. His sons Richard, John, and Solomon also enlisted; John and Solomon died of illness in Florida during the war.

In 1870, David and Betsy were in Sandy River Township, Franklin County with children Charles E. P. (18), Betsey P. (16), Carrie A. (13), Mary A. (11), D. B. Jr. (9), and Effie E. (5).

The 1880 census for Anson, Somerset County showed David and Betsy with Betsy’s mother Huldah K. Peary (88), and children Charles E. (28), David B. (19), Effie E. (16), Elsie M. (11), and John S. (7). Given Betsy’s age, I doubt that all of these were their biological children, although they’re all listed as sons and daughters.

In the 1900 census, Betsy claimed 11 children, 7 still living, which would seem to rule out Effie, Elsie, and John S., so I don’t know where they came from. Betsy died in 1905. David died in 1910 and is buried with Betsy at Sunset Cemetery, North Anson, Somerset County, Maine.

Mary Ann Abbott (1820-1902)

Mary Ann married John Chubb (23 Apr 1819-21 Jan 1906) of Boston probably in the late 1830s. They had no children. In 1839 they moved to Galveston, Texas, of all places, where John worked as a ship captain. The 1850 census found them there, ages 28 and 29. In 1860, Mary Ann’s widowed mother was staying with them.

During the Civil War, John sided with the Confederacy, commanding a gunboat and later supervising the Galveston Bay naval works. He and Mary Ann were still there in 1870 and 1880, raising their niece Maggie, daughter of Mary Ann’s younger sister Caroline. In 1880 they also had a woman from Florida as a housekeeper.

They were still in Galveston in 1900, just the two of them by then. Mary Ann died in Galveston in 1902, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Galveston. John died four years later and is buried with her.

Samuel Abbott (1824-1907)

Samuel married Eunice W. Foster (~1830-1876) in Boston in 1846. They remained in Boston, and had six children:

Samuel, Jr. (23 Oct 1846-20 May 1923) — m. Asenath C. Reed on 29 Dec 1866

Hannah Louisa “Louisa” (9 Jan 1849-6 May 1909) — m. George McDonnell on 25 Apr 1867

Henrietta F. (1851-1909) — m. Melville E. Shorey on 20 Apr 1870

Benjamin Franklin “Frank” (20 Jun 1853–17 Apr 1875)

Hattie S. A. (1857-after 1930) — m. John F. Holmes on 15 Jun 1874

Sylvester Stone (31 Jul 1859–24 Nov 1860)

Eunice died in 1876. In 1900, Samuel was living with his daughter Hattie and her children in Boston. He died in 1907. He’s buried in Forest Hills Cemetery, Jamaica Plain, Suffolk County, Massachusetts with Eunice and their sons Benjamin and Sylvester. All their children remained in Boston.

Hannah R. Abbott (1826-1884)

Hannah married Thomas Abbott Byron (27 Aug 1823-20 Jul 1906) of Massachusetts in 1846. They lived in Everett, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on the north side of Boston. Known children:

Thomas Abbott, Jr. (21 Jun 1848-24 Dec 1893) — m. Mary Eliza Simonds in 1866

Hannah A. (1853-1900) — m. William H. Campbell on 30 Oct 1873

Ruth B. (1855-15 Oct 1857)

Lillian Ann (~1861-23 Feb 1879)

Clara Louise (14 Nov 1862-26 May 1908) — m. Weston R. Page on 27 Mar 1886

Samuel Augustus (5 Feb 1867-26 Mar 1949) — m. Clarissa Jane McAlpine in 1891; m. Helen O’Brien in 1896

The 1855 Massachusetts census showed Hannah’s widowed mother living with her. Hannah died in 1884. She’s buried in Everett Cemetery with her mother. In 1900, her widower, Thomas, was living with the widower of daughter Hannah Jr. and some grandkids. Thomas died in 1906 and is buried with Hannah.

Caroline A. F. Abbott (1834-1894)

Caroline claimed to have been born in Boston, and I can’t rule it out. She married Matthias W. Darton (Aug 1830-????) in 1851 in Boston. He was the son of English immigrants William and Lucy Darton, and was reportedly born either in Nova Scotia or at sea. Caroline and Mathias had six children, the first born well before their marriage:

Georgia Anna Elizabeth (24 Feb 1850-7 Feb 1929) — m. Louis Blaylock on 1 Jun 1871

William (~1854-18 Jul 1854)

Mary Jane (1854-3 Dec 1904) — m. Augustus Randolph Railey on 26 Jan 1871

Naomia (15 Oct 1855-17 Nov 1861)

Daniel B. (15 Sep 1857-15 Apr 1940) — m. Jemima Davenport on 28 Jun 1893

Magadaline Chubb “Maggie” (22 Sep 1861-4 Mar 1948) — m. Thomas E. Bollinger on 23 Dec 1884

In the late 1850s, the family followed Caroline’s older sister Mary Ann and moved to Galveston, Texas. For unknown reasons, they left their youngest, Maggie, in Mary Ann’s care there. They might have subsequently settled in New Orleans, as an 1880 business directory for the city lists an engineer with the unusual name of Mathias W. Darton, but they’re absent from census records. Caroline died in 1894 in Houston, and is buried in Oakland Cemetery, Dallas, Texas. Daughter Georgia was later buried there as well.
