Jean-Baptiste ARSENAULT (~1728-????) +
Madeleine HACHÉ dit GALLANT (~1736-1810)

Abraham (~1763-18xx) — m. Marguerite Arsenault about 1794

Théotiste (~1774-????) — m. Cyprien Arsenault

Pelagie (~1775-18xx) — m. Cyprien Canard dit Arsenault about 1794

Martine (~1778-18xx) — m. Joseph Richard about 1800

Modeste Marie-Rose (~1781-16 Sep 1844) — m. Isidore Poirier about 1801

Hilaire (~1783-23 May 1876) — m. Angelique Arsenault in 1807

Eustache (~1785-14 Oct 1856) — m. Marguerite Poirier in 1808

Jean (~1791-15 Oct 1880) — m. Modeste Poirier

Fidele (~1798-1846) — m. Juliette Gallant on 14 Nov 1817

Jean’s parentage is disputed. The candidates to be his parents are 1) Pierre Arsenault (1698-????) and Marie Marguerite Cormier (~1706-????), who married on 18 Aug 1722 in Beaubassin, Nova Scotia; and 2) Jean Jacques Arsenault (1707-1768) and Marie Jeanne Hébert (1708-????), who married about 1725, also in Beaubassin.

Madeleine was the eldest of 12 children born to Jacques Haché dit Gallant (1712-1793) and Marie Josephe Boudrot (1717-1798), who married on 20 Jun 1735 at Saint-Jean-l’Evangélist in Port-Lajoie (Fort Amherst), Prince Edward Island.

Jean and Madeleine presumably married about 1762. Based on where their children were said to have been born, they lived first in Malpèque, Prince Edward Island, and later in Egmont Bay.

Madeleine supposedly died in 1810. No information about Jean.

Children

Abraham Arsenault (~1763-18xx)

Abraham has his own entry in the family tree.

Théotiste Arsenault (~1774-????)

Théotiste married Cyprien Arsenault (~1746-26 Apr 1815) from Malpeque, date unknown. (The claim that they married in 1835 flies in the face of other evidence, not the least of which is that Cyprien was long dead by then.) Known children, all of whom were born well before 1835:

Cyprien, as noted, died in 1815. Nothing further.

Pelagie Arsenault (~1775-18xx)

Pelagie married Cyprien Canard dit Arsenault (????-15 Feb 1836) about 1794 in Malpèque. Their children:

Modeste died on Prince Edward Island in 1844. Don’t know about Isidore.

Son Firmin Poirier had a namesake of almost the same age who lived in the same area of Prince Edward Island. Their records frequently get crossed.

Hilaire Arsenault (~1783-1876)

Hilaire married Angelique Arsenault (Oct 1785-14 Jan 1861) in 1807 in Malpèque. Their children:

Jean (~1809-9 Sep 1878) — m. Edesse Arsenault on 22 Nov 1831

Eustache Arsenault (~1785-1856)

Eustache married Marguerite Poirier (~1785-????), daughter of Jean Poirier and Francoise Arsenault, in 1808 at Egmont Bay. Children:

Magdeleine (18 Oct 1828-19xx) — m. Amand Gallant on 30 Oct 1849

Louise (~1834-????)

Based on places of birth, the family lived in either Tignish or Abram’s Village, Prince Edward Island. Eustache died in 1856.

Tharsile Arsenault (1786-18xx)

The claim that Tharsile was born in Quebec doesn’t seem likely. She married Nicolas dit Colas Arsenault (1786-1855) about 1805. Familysearch.org credits her as the mother of ten children starting in 1794, which is also pretty unlikely. The children for whom there’s at least some evidence connecting them to this family:

Fidele (~1812-????) — m. Agnes Arseneaux about 1838

Louis (15 Jun 1813-1897) — m. Madeleine Pitre

Joseph (1 May 1816-????) — m.

Prosper (~1822-1900) — m.

Aimable (~1822-13 May 1899) — m. Marguerite Bernard on 28 Jun 1853; m. Philomène Gallant on 17 Aug 1868

Jean (~1825-1881) — m. Anne Gallant on 6 Oct 1846

They probably lived in South Rustico. Nicolas died in 1855 in Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island. Don’t know about Tharsile.

The careless mistakes continue in the familysearch.org data for some of their children, such as Louis getting married around the time he was born.

Jean Arsenault (~1791-1880)

Jean married Modeste Poirier (~1800-18xx) in Egmont Bay, date undetermined (it was not 1821). Baptism records from St. Jacques in Egmont Bay identify eight children:

Marie (7 May 1813-????) — m. Joseph Gallant in 1834

Joseph (1819-25 Jul 1879) — m. Judith Aucoin on 27 Oct 1845

Judith (21 Jul 1830-????)

Marie Rose (26 Dec 1836-????)

Jean died in 1880.

Fidele Arsenault (1798-1846)

Fidele, whose branch of the family seems to have gone for the “Arseneau” spelling, married Juliette Gallant (~1790-????) on 14 Nov 1817 in Miscouche, Prince Edward Island. Their children:

Magdeleine (6 Dec 1818-23 Mar 1846) — m. Placide Maillet on 7 Apr 1839

The family lived in Malpèque and later in Egmont Bay. Fidele died in 1846 at Bas-Cap-Pelé, Westmorland, New Brunswick.
